26.02.2026 · Cristallo

On the first day of February ’26, we came to Cristallo.

Hidden in the heart of Alta Badia, surrounded by snow-covered peaks and quiet alpine villages, Hotel Cristallo feels like it belongs exactly where it stands. The Dolomites rise in every direction, sharp and dramatic, almost unreal in winter.

Many people know Cristallo for its famous glass infinity pool — one of the most photographed in the Dolomites. That transparent wall that allows those perfectly framed, almost surreal “Instagram” shots. And yes, it is beautiful.

But what we discovered is that the real magic is on the other side of that glass — the side that few people turn their cameras toward.

From the water, you look up and the mountains feel so close it almost makes you quiet. The massif above us — known locally as Para dai Giai, part of the majestic Parco Naturale Puez-Odle — rises straight into the sky. Covered in snow, sculpted by wind, powerful and still. It feels close enough to touch. You float there in warm water while snow falls gently around you, and for a moment you forget everything else exists.

Snow followed us the entire stay. Big, soft flakes. Every morning the world looked freshly painted. A true winter wonderland.

But before we even saw the pool, before the mountains, there was the welcome.

I have never experienced anything like it. Just like in their sister hotel, Hotel Tofana — where we stayed for Christmas — we opened the door to a room filled with helium balloons floating above us. A tray of the most perfect fruit. A bottle of champagne waiting on ice. The finest handmade chocolate pralines I have ever tasted.

And this time — rose petals scattered across the bed. Little candies everywhere. A small heart made entirely of petals. The most thoughtful birthday surprise and the softest introduction to the Valentine’s days that followed.

On our first evening, we walked down to what we thought would be a quiet drink… and stepped into an Aperitivo party unlike anything we’ve seen before. Throughout the reception and bar area, elegant tables were set with delicate bites — small pizzas, prosciutto, seafood salads, fruit, finger food in every direction. Aperol Spritz in our hands. Laughter everywhere.

And live music — Giorgio moving effortlessly from piano to saxophone to flute, even singing. The atmosphere felt warm, effortless, generous. The kind of event that makes you look at each other and say, this is how it should be done.

Andrea behind the bar. Laura serving aperitivi with the brightest smile. Ilaria at reception. Giorgio and so many others whose names we wish we could list one by one. They talked with us, laughed with us, took photos, posed with us — and on our last day, they were almost as sad as we were. These people are the soul of Cristallo. You can design beautiful spaces, but you cannot fake that kind of heart.

On the first day of February ’26, we came to Cristallo.

And somewhere between the mountains above the pool, the falling snow, and the people who made it feel like home, we understood why some places stay with you long after you leave. 🤍
